Fashion Drawing Exercise

It’s been a side passion of mine to draw pretty people in fashionable outfits. When I’m not busy with work, I will usually try to practice more on drawing fashion illustrations.

A little while back, I borrowed a couple of fashion books from the library. It’s A Life in Pattern by Orla Kiely and Women in This Town by Giuseppe Santamaria. I could spend hours looking at beautiful fashion photos, either it’s professional photoshoot or street photography. Both have their own charms and especially the books I borrowed are full of it!

A Life in Pattern is filled with, well, patterns. I love pattern and I love Orla Kiely’s work. Women in This Town is more of showcasing street fashion from cities like London, Tokyo, Melbourne, and New York.

I made a few sketches of some of the photographs from the books that I found captivating. If you want to be better at drawing, I feel it’s important to exercise from things you like because it will make you happy doing it.

And while still exercising, don’t worry about making mistake or even trying too hard to produce the best artwork. Exercise is meant for learning and exploring. Just try to focus on drawing what you see and observe how you look at things. Some sketches will be bad, but that’s okay because then you will discover what you like and don’t like about your art.

When I’m done with the sketches, I also tried to experiment with some different approaches of colouring. This is also a way for me to find illustration style that I like.

There’s still so much to learn and I’m still striving to get better at drawing every day.

Wishing you a wonderful time.
